Area includes the sounds and coastal waters < 50 miles offshore and <50m in depth.A study of the feasibility of utility-scale power generation using wind farms deployed in the coastal and offshore waters of North Carolina was completed in summer 2009 in response to a request from the NC State Legislature in summer 2008. As prescribed by the state legislation, the study examined the wind resource, turbine foundations and suitable geology for them, legal and permitting issues, power transmission infrastructure, preliminary economic costs and carbon savings, and a suite of use conflicts, both natural and those associated with human activities. Many of the results have been expressed as maps, and have been combined to define conflicted and un-conflicted marine areas.
